Camden County
Library System loans books and other library materials free of
charge to people residing in those towns which pay the county
library tax. That tax is a dedicated tax and appears as a separate
line on the tax bill of those who pay it. New Jersey Library law
states that those municipalities that have their own municipal
library need not pay the county library tax.
If you reside in
a nonmember community (one which does not pay the county library
tax) or a community outside of Camden County, you will be charged
$85 a year, $50 for 6 months or $25 for 3 months for your
family/household to join the library, to receive a card and to
borrow library materials. If you are 65 or older and reside in a
nonmember community in Camden County, the fee for an annual membership is $20.
There are some exceptions to the residency rule. Business owners,
teachers, Camden County employees and Camden County College students, nonprofit organizations,
library volunteers, and LVA tutors and students may be eligible for a free
library card. See all the exceptions.
How to apply for a library card
If you reside in
a nonmember community and wish your community to join the county
library system, the process must be initiated by your local
governing body. Check with them to see what must be done.
