Library Collecting Donations for
Hurricane-Damaged Library
The Camden County Library System is collecting donations
to aid a hurricane-damaged library in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
A 6/28 article in the Courier-Post describes the drive.
The Westwego Branch lost more than 7500 books and
suffered serious flood damage. Although the library was recently
re-opened there is no carpet and little furniture. Large sections of
wallboard are missing. Those who wish to help the library rebuild
can make a donation at the Camden County Library: collection jars
have been put up in all branches. Donations can also be mailed to:
Friends of the Jefferson Public Library, P.O. Box 9391, Metairie, La.,
70055.

Vote for
the Best Book of the Past 10 Years
The New York Times Book Review recently asked prominent
writers, critics, editors and literary sages this question:
"What is the best work of American fiction of the last 25
years?" They had a number of responses; more
than twenty books received multiple votes. The number
one choice was Beloved by Toni Morrison.
See the NY Times article.
Now we'd like to find out what Camden County
Library patrons think. We've polled the library staff for
their choice of the best book of the past ten years. Vote
for your favorite, or write in your own choice. We'll
add that title to our list. You can vote online or

The Friends
will be selling over
Over 40,000 Books of all types, CDs, Videos,
Books-on-Tape, LPs, Magazines…. and more! 90% of
the items have been donated. Prices range from
$.50 to $3.00.
Our used book sales have become a favorite for used book
dealers for several reasons (according to their
feedback):
-
Over 90% of the books are donated from patrons,
collectors and estates (that means less than 10% are
ex-library copies)
-
We price 99% at $1 or
under and nothing is more than $3.
-
We do not allow
pre-views or pre-sale visits which would
cull out better books.
-
We put additional books out continuously (we have a
warehouse storage room full of books and the supply
is constantly replenished—we will try to put as many
as possible out at the
beginning this year)
-
We sort by subject.
-
We will put out or
sell an estimated 40,000 books and AV
items (or more) over the course of three
days.
-
This year’s sales
will be our biggest ever by far. We have never had so
many books to sell and have had a record number of
book donations in the last couple months.
We are putting out many more tables of books.
This will be the biggest library book sale in Camden
County history.
- All proceeds support the Friends of the Camden
County Library
(a non-profit 501 (c)3 corporation which helps
support the library)
-
We can put boxes of
books you select aside, until you are ready to leave
to make your visit easier. We take checks

schools are now available on the library website. You can get to
the lists from Kids' World, Teen Zone, and the Reader's Club on the

Don't wait for the last minute to check out required books!
Most books are available now, and any that are not can be requested and
received well before the end of summer. Those who wait for the
last minute to check out their summer reading often find that few of the
titles are on the shelves.

Teen Librarian Named a “Mover &
Shaker” by Library Journal
Outstanding
work with teens has earned Sophie Brookover Library Journal’s
prestigious 2006 “Movers & Shakers” award.
Brookover, a teen librarian at the Vogelson branch of Camden
County Library System since 2004, is one of only 50 in the country
to receive the honor from this national publication.
Brookover has done extensive work using pop culture to keep teens
and older kids interested in what the library has to offer. “They
want to see their tastes and interests reflected in our collections
and in the programming we deliver,” Brookover has said. “They want
to see that we take their interests seriously.”
Christine Borne of the Ocean County Library, who nominated
Brookover for the award, said, “Sophie is all over the place with
excitement about the intersection of pop culture and libraries.”
In addition to Brookover’s accomplishments at the library, she
co-authors a blog called Pop Goes the Library (http://www.popgoesthelibrary.com),
where she writes on how public libraries can and should use pop
culture to stay relevant and interesting to teens.

Family Gift
Brings New History DVDs to Library
A
generous donation in memory of a longtime Bellmawr resident has
significantly increased the Bellmawr Branch Library’s collection of
history programs on DVD.
The family of Melvyn Suplee made a donation that allowed the library
to purchase 65 titles covering American, ancient and world history. Many
of the videos are television programs from The History Channel® and The
Biography Channel® that have been reproduced in DVD format.
The family made the donation in memory of Mr. Suplee, who passed away
in 2003. Married for 37 years with three daughters and three
grandchildren, Mr. Suplee was a contract specialist for Thomas Jefferson
University, and at the time of his death was the municipal chairman of
the Bellmawr Republican Club.
Family members sought to remember his lifelong love of history and
learning with the library gift. The Bellmawr Branch Library will
acknowledge the Suplee donation with a plaque in the branch and seals
that will be affixed to each DVD.
While the DVDs will reside at the Bellmawr Branch, all members of the
Camden County Library System may borrow the materials through the
library’s online catalog. |

who will give them to foster children in Camden County in time for
the new school year.
