A Trip of a
Lifetime - China for 17 days
Haddon
Twp. Branch
Wednesday, April 29, 7 p.m.
Come
hear about Roberta and David Matz's dream trip to China - 7
cities, a cruise on the Yangtze and Li rivers - a blending
of the old and new China.
Last year, before the Summer Olympics, David and Roberta
Matz realized a life long dream and travelled to Peking, the
Great Wall, Xian, Shanghai, Guilin, the Yangtze River region
and Hong Kong. Touring with an international group, led by
natives of each city, they experienced the traditional
sights as well as home visits with ordinary Chinese
citizens. Today, China is a world class economy, rapidly
catching up to more established modern economies. Yet, the
ancient temples and palaces exist amongst the new office
towers and apartments buildings. Bikes crowd the streets
with cars, people commute hours to work via new subways,
life is a bustle and foreigners are welcome everywhere. The
couple will be showing slides from their trip and talking
about the contrast between what we expect and what the
reality of China is today.
David and
Roberta Matz developed a love of travel on their first big
vacation after 25 years of marriage on a cruise to Alaska.
Since then, they have been on several cruises to Europe and
the Caribbean, and have visited London, Paris, Barcelona,
Lisbon, Athens, Istanbul, Israel and many sites in the
United States and Canada. David has travelled extensively on
business for DuPont and even learned some Japanese for his
many trips there. Roberta has travelled to Israel many times
on business and the two of them love exploring new places on
their own and experiencing a country through its food and
wine. China was the highlight of a lifetime, though David is
sure that Roberta still has a long list of places to see
before they die or run out of money.
David is a
chemical engineer who recently retired from E.I. DuPont
DeNemours. His hobbies are wine, photography and cycling.
Roberta has been an educator and a community outreach
professional. Her hobbies are food, shopping, reading and
her granddaughters.
